Scandal Point is a popular attraction in Shimla in Himachal Pradesh.
First off, let’s just appreciate the amazing scenery that this point has to offer. With towering mountains and dense forests, this place is a nature lover’s paradise. You can even take a horse ride and enjoy some hill station Maggi while playing some arcade games in the nearby shops.
Now, let’s get to the juicy part. The Scandal Point got its name from a steamy love affair between Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala and the daughter of British Viceroy, Lord Kitchener. It all started when Kitchener’s daughter was forced to move to Shimla and was none too pleased about it. But, when she met the handsome Maharaja, she fell head over heels in love. The two lovebirds were inseparable, but when Kitchener found out, he was not a happy camper. He ordered his daughter to end things, but the heart wants what it wants, and the couple decided to elope.
And guess where they chose to run away from it all? That’s right, the Scandal Point! This caused quite a stir in the town, and the story has gone down in history as one of the first alliances between the British and Indians. Lord Kitchener was so angry that he expelled the Maharaja from Shimla, but love prevailed, and the Maharaja built a summer capital in Chail, just 50 miles away.
So, if you want to check out the scandalous spot where it all went down, head to the Mall Road and take the lift operated by the Himachal Tourism Development Corporation. It’ll cost you INR 8, but trust us, it’s worth it. Just don’t go causing any scandals of your own!
