Nestled amidst the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayas lies a hidden gem that promises to leave you spellbound – the Robber’s Cave. Located just 8 km away from the bustling city of Dehradun, this river cave formation near Sahasradhara (thousand-fold spring) is a natural wonder that is waiting to be explored.

Imagine walking through a 600-metre long cave that has a highest fall of 10 metres, surrounded by the dark limestone cliffs that echo with the sound of rushing water. It’s like being transported to a scene straight out of a mystery movie, and the thrill of discovering the unknown is just too hard to resist. But the story of this place is not just limited to its breathtaking beauty.

The Robber’s Cave, also known as Gachhu Pani, has a rich history that goes back to the late 1800s. It was used by robbers as a hiding place from the British and was considered the perfect labyrinth for hiding due to its natural and local conditions. Local legend has it that the robbers used these caves to hide valuable items, and the name ‘Robber’s Cave’ still sticks till date.

The cave is a narrow gorge formed between a conglomerate limestone formation, and its speciality lies in the fact that the river water flows out from the middle of the cave. During scorching-hot summer afternoons, the cave cools down with the help of the extraordinary cold water underground springs, making it a perfect picnic spot for friends and family.

After exploring the inside of the cave, you can walk to the waterfall near the cave for a picnic and capture some unforgettable moments. The sight of a rainbow in the sky over the falls is a bonus that nature has to offer.

Don’t miss the chance to visit the Tibetan Buddhist Temple, the Takpeshwar Temple, the Ramakrishna Ashram Temple and the Dehradun Zoo, which are located just 2 to 4 km away from Robber’s Cave. And remember to wear footwear that provides enough support and grip while exploring the stream, as the water could get knee-high for adults. Rent rubber flip flops/chappals outside the entry, carry enough water and snacks, and be careful while exploring the cave.

So, pack your bags and head to the heart of the Himalayas to discover the mysterious and mesmerizing Robber’s Cave. Trust us, it will be a trip worth remembering for a lifetime!
