Mawlynnong, aka God’s own Garden is a small village located in the East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya.

It is a paradise on earth, and it’s not just us saying that. Discovery India declared it the cleanest village in Asia in 2003, and trust us, they weren’t kidding.

The entire community has come together to make this place a model of cleanliness, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Indian state. In fact, the waste collected here is turned into manure, making this place not only clean but also eco-friendly.

But let’s not forget about the natural beauty of Mawlynnong. This place is a photographer’s dream with lush green valleys, crystal clear rivers, and orchids hanging from the trees. It’s like Mother Nature has put on her best outfit just for us.

If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, head over to the Umngot/Dawki river, known as the cleanest river in India. The boats seem like they’re floating on the riverbed, and the experience is simply breathtaking. And if you’re a waterfall enthusiast, Bophill falls and Umgrem falls are the hidden gems you don’t want to miss.

For the adventurous types, don’t forget to visit the Sky Walk, an 85-feet tower that offers a panoramic view of the landscape and the Indo-Bangladesh border. You’ll also get to witness the locals performing their daily activities, which is an experience in itself.

And last but not least, let’s not forget about the living root bridge and Riwai village. The bridge is made up of aerial roots of rubber fig trees, making it not only a sight to see but also a testament to the engineering skills of the locals. And if you’re up for a trek, Riwai village is the place to be.

So when should you visit Mawlynnong? Anytime! The weather is pleasant throughout the year, but if you want to experience the village at its best, come during the monsoon season. The place turns into a green paradise that’ll make you feel like you’re on cloud nine.

And don’t worry about getting here. You can take a taxi or bus from Shillong to Dawki, which is only an hour away. From there, shared taxis are available for the village. Just make sure you book a cab from Shillong to visit the village.
