Kankwadi or Kankwari is the site of Kankwadi fort and village, located in the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Alwar district of Rajasthan.

Step back in time to the seventeenth century and the reign of Maharaja Jai Singh I, as we take you on a journey to the breathtaking Kankwari Fort. This historic fort holds a rich story of the Mughal Prince Dara Shikoh, who was once held captive here by his own brother Aurangzeb. As a patron of the arts and music, Dara Shikoh was favored by King Shah Jahan to become his heir, but unfortunately, the story took a different turn.

As you embark on a jungle safari through Sariska Tiger Reserve, you’ll come across this hidden gem, located deep in the heart of the reserve. The fort stands tall on a hillock, surrounded by the lush greenery of the protected forest. A winding path beyond a moat leads you to the main gate, where you’ll be transported to a world of opulence and beauty. The chhatris, intricate wall paintings, and gardens are a testament to the magnificent times the fort once witnessed.

The highlight of your visit to Kankwari Fort is the stunning view from the top, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the jungle below. But be warned, reaching the fort is no easy feat. The only way to get there is through a jungle safari, and you’ll need to be prepared for a bumpy ride. The fort is located far from the main entry gate and can only be visited within the designated safari timings of 7 am to 10 am and 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm. So, make sure you plan your visit accordingly and give yourself enough time to fully explore the fort.

As you traverse the tough jungle tracks, keep an eye out for wildlife. You never know what kind of furry friends you might run into. And who knows, you might even get lucky and see some wild animals on your way to the fort. So, pack your bags, lace up your boots, and join us on this historic journey to Kankwari Fort. Happy exploring!”

The fort was founded by Jai Singh 2 as a famine work. In the 17th century, Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb briefly imprisoned his brother Dara Shikoh in the struggle for the succession of the Mughal throne.

The village was evicted in 2009, but renovation works in the fort are going on to promote tourism. As of August 2016, only three families reside in the village below the fort, but their migration is in progress by the government.

The fort remains open from October to July end throughout the year and anyone can visit it after renting a Safari Jeep from the Forest Office.
