Government Museum and Art Gallery is in Sector 10 in Chandigarh

It was built during partition of 1947 and is known for its rich collection of paintings, artifacts, and sculptures. Plus, it’s got some pretty sweet architecture designed by Le Corbusier that’s sure to make you do a double take.

First up, we’ve got the ground floor, This 33,000 sq ft of pure bliss is where you’ll find the museum shop (where you can buy all the souvenirs you can carry), the reception (where you can check in and leave your boring adult responsibilities at the door), the textile section (where you can ogle at ancient threads), the child art gallery (where the little ones can unleash their inner Picasso), the exhibition hall (where you can feast your eyes on some of the most incredible art you’ll ever see), the reserve collection stores (where they keep all the good stuff), the conservation laboratory (where they work their magic to keep the art in tip-top shape), and the auditorium (where you can sit and soak it all in).

Next up, we’ve got the second floor, “Gandhara Sculpture Haven”. This 23,000 sq ft of awesomeness is where you’ll find the exhibition space for sections on Gandhara sculpture, Indian miniature paintings, stone and metal sculpture, coins, and Indian contemporary art. It’s like an art buffet and you’re the hungry art lover.

Finally, we’ve got the top floor, the “Library of Knowledge and Gandhara Sculptures’ Reserve Collection Store”. This 6,500 sq ft of brilliance is where you’ll find the library (where you can expand your mind and learn something new).

But wait, there’s more! Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (except for those pesky holidays), the museum hosts a Light and Sound show that will both educate and entertain you. And the best part? It’s completely free!

Just make sure to check the timing depending on the season: Winter: 6:30 PM – 7:15 PM, Summer: 7:30 PM – 8:15 PM

But that’s not all folks! You can even book a guided tour in Hindi, English or French in advance, or grab a free audio guide at the ticket counter.

Let’s not forget the view of the Shivalik ranges in the background. It’s the cherry on top of this historical sundae. So pack your bags, grab your camera and get ready for a trip to remember at Government Museum and Art Gallery in Chandigarh.
