Cholamu Lake is the 14th highest lake in the world and the highest lake in India.

Located at an altitude of 18,000 feet from the sea level, this frozen lake is not for the faint-hearted. You have to be a true adventurer to even attempt to visit this place.

As you slide down the slope around 300 feet from Donkiala pass, which is at an elevation of 18300 feet, the first glimpse of this moderately-sized, almost frozen lake will leave you gasping for breath- and not just because of the high altitude. This stunning lake is only a few kilometers away from the Tibet border and is off-limits for commonplace tourists. You need special permits from the Army and Sikkim police/administration to visit the Cholamu Lake. Talk about exclusive!

Also known as Tso Lhamo Lake, it is advisable not to visit this place during monsoons or winters. Unless you are a seasoned traveler or an expert trekker, skip the family trip and visit the Gurudongmar Lake instead. But if you are up for the challenge and can get the permit easily, then brace yourself for a trekking experience like no other.

Since most travel agencies refuse to risk their vehicles and drivers in this risky terrain, the only way to get to this magical lake is through trekking. But trust us when we say that it’s totally worth it. There are very few places in the world with more sublime associations than this calm sheet of water, surrounded by the shadows of mountains 22,000 to 24,000 feet high, resting on its surface. This lake is purely for nature lovers who want to lose themselves in the beauty of it. Of course, don’t forget to snap some awe-inspiring pictures.

The ideal time to visit Cholamu Lake is during the months of October and November, when the sky is clear and the weather is less harsh. Avoid visiting this lake right after the monsoons, as most of the roads would be washed away with rains, and the Border road organization (BRO) will be busy patching up the roads. So, pack your bags, take on the challenge, and head to Cholamu Lake to witness the serene beauty that will leave you spellbound. And while you’re there, don’t forget to visit the nearby Gurudongmar Lake too!
