If you’re in Rishikesh and looking for a spiritual experience, you can’t miss visiting the ancient Bharat Mandir. Founded in the 12th century by Adiguru Shankaracharya, this temple is home to a unique idol of Lord Vishnu, carved out of a single piece of Saligram. That’s right, just one stone!

Legend has it that the Pandavas, after the great Mahabharata war, stayed at this very spot and worshipped Hrishikesh Narayan. The temple has seen its fair share of destruction over the years, including an attack by the infamous Taimur in 1398 AD. But, like a true champ, the temple was rebuilt on the ruins of the original structure.

The temple is home to the famous Shree Yanthra, located in the inner canopy. For those unfamiliar with Hindu mythology, it’s a mystical diagram used in meditation to connect with the divine. The temple also boasts an impressive collection of sculptures, pottery, and coins found during excavation.

If you’re planning a visit, be sure to come during the spring festival of Vasant Panchami. The festival is a grand celebration, complete with a procession carrying the idol of Lord Vishnu to nearby Mayakund for a holy bath. If you’re really looking to score some divine brownie points, take 108 rounds around the temple on Akshaya Tritiya day. It’s said to be equivalent to a holy pilgrimage to Badrinath Dham!

Oh, and don’t forget to check out the museum on the temple grounds. It’s a haven for history buffs and archaeologists alike.

So, whether you’re a devout believer or just curious about ancient history, a visit to Bharat Mandir is a must. The temple is open from 5 AM – 12 PM and 4 PM – 9 PM, so there’s plenty of time to squeeze in a visit.
