Amber Fort or Amer Fort is a UNESCO Heritage fort located in Amber, Rajasthan, India

Nestled on the top of a hill near Jaipur, lies the Fort, is a magnificent palace that exudes grandeur and mystery. Also known as the Amber Fort, this architectural gem boasts maze-like passages, serpentine staircases, and a breathtaking view of the Maotha Lake. This fort is more than just a building, it is a history book that tells the story of the Rajput Rulers and their trusted general, Maharaja Man Singh I, who built the fort in 1592.

Just a short 11-kilometer drive from Jaipur, the Amer Fort stands tall, clad in pink and yellow sandstone, as a part of an extensive complex. This fort is big enough to keep you exploring for hours and with audio guides available, you can take a step back in time and learn about the history of this amazing place. And, if you’re feeling adventurous, why not try an elephant ride up the stairs to the fort?

The Amer Fort is a part of the “Hill Forts of Rajasthan”, along with five other forts and it’s not hard to see why. With its traditional Hindu and Rajputana style of architecture, the fort is aesthetically crafted out of marble and red sandstone, giving it a rustic and mysterious look. Inside, you’ll find intricate paintings of ancient hunting styles and portraits of significant Rajput rulers, each entrance and courtyard more beautiful than the last.

The main entrance to the fort, called the ‘Suraj Pol’ or Sun Gate, leads to the main courtyard, the ‘Jaleb Chowk’, which was once used by the army to display their war booty. The ‘Diwan-e-Aam’ (Public Audience Hall) stands on the support of two pillars with mounted elephants, and is a massive hall open on three sides, with extensive mosaic glassworks.

The third courtyard of the Amer Fort is around the royal quarters, with entrance through the ‘Ganesh Pol’. Here, you’ll find the ‘Sheesh Mahal’, a beautiful hall with walls and ceilings adorned with intricate carvings of flowers and glass paintings. The ‘Sukh Mahal’ is another hall opposite to the Sheesh Mahal, built of sandalwood and ivory, with numerous channels with running cold water. And, don’t forget to check out the ‘Magic Flower’, a fresco carved out of marble and a delicate carving of Lord Ganesha out of a single piece of coral.

The final level of the Amer Fort was built for Royal women and has a courtyard surrounded by several rooms. The highlight of this level is the ‘Jas Mandir’, which was used for private audiences.

Every evening, the Amer Fort holds a fifty-minute light and sound show, showcasing the history of Jaipur and the fort, with local legends, folklore, and folk music. The show aims to revive the state’s rich history, tradition, and culture, and is a truly magical experience. Just remember, photography, video or audio recordings of the show are prohibited.

So, if you’re looking for a glimpse into the rich history and culture of India, then a visit to the Amer Fort is a must. With its stunning architecture and breathtaking views, you’ll be glad you made the journey.
