Qila Mubarak is in Patiala in Punjab.

The city of Patiala has emperor’s gardens, palaces in aplenty! And what better place to start your historical journey than at Quila Mubarak – the granddaddy of all monuments in Patiala.

Located right in the heart of the city, Quila Mubarak was built by the one and only Maharaja Ala Singh in 1764. Can you imagine? This palace has been standing for over 250 years! Back in the day, Quila Mubarak was just a small mud fort, but over time it was transformed into the majestic palace that it is today. It’s like a before and after Instagram transformation, but in real life.

But wait, there’s more! Quila Mubarak was not just any ordinary palace, it was the palace where the royal members of the Patiala dynasty lived. Maharaja Sahib Singh, Maharaja Karam Singh, and Maharaja Narinder Singh all called this palace home. Talk about royal real estate!

The Quila Mubarak complex stands on 10 acres of land and is made up of several buildings, including the main palace, Quila Androon, the guesthouse Darbar Hall, Sard Khana, Jalau Khana, Quila Mubarak Gateway, and boundary walls. The Quila is surrounded by three major commercial markets, Bajaj Bazaar, the Gur Mandi, and Shah Nashin Bazaar. It’s like a palace and shopping center all in one!

One of the best parts of Quila Mubarak is the courtyards. Each courtyard is like a palace within a palace. The west courtyards are private and residential, while the east courtyards are for public use, like music and art performances. And let’s not forget about the passage between the central and east axis, which leads to the houses of the sacred flame – the jyot – brought from Jwalamukhi by Baba Ala Singh. It’s like a palace, history lesson, and spiritual journey all in one!

Overall, Quila Mubarak is a must-see for any history buff or architecture enthusiast. The palace may not be occupied by royalty anymore, but its cultural importance lies in its form and the way its space is utilized. So, come and visit Quila Mubarak, where history and culture come alive!
