Looking for an exciting trekking destination? Look no further than Lohagad Fort, perched at a lofty 3400 feet and just 52 kilometers away from Pune. This UNESCO world heritage site is a true masterpiece of ancient architecture and natural beauty.

In fact, it’s so impressive that even Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj used to stash his treasure here!

The fort is an easy trek with stone steps all the way to the top. Just watch out for mossy spots during the monsoon season!

There are two main routes to the fort, one from the village of Lohagadwadi and the other from Bhaje village. The latter will take you to Gaumukh Khand, where you’ll need to take a right turn instead of a left to avoid ending up at Visapur fort. The trek to the fort is perfect for first-timers and hiking enthusiasts alike. And once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views and the chance to explore a massive structure that was once under the control of the mighty Maratha Empire.

But Lohagad Fort isn’t just a pretty face – it has a long and illustrious history dating back to the Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Nizams, Mughals and, of course, the Marathas. Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort in 1648 AD, lost it to the Mughals in 1665 AD, and recaptured it in 1670 AD to use as a treasury. Later, Nana Phadnavis used the fort as a residence and built a big tank and a step-well.

But that’s not all – Lohagad Fort has even more secrets to reveal. In September 2019, a team of trekkers from Pune discovered an inscription in Brahmi script in Prakrit language dating back to the 2nd or 1st century BC in one of the caves on the cliff. The inscription mentions the name “Ida Rakhita,” who donated water cisterns and rock-cut benches to settlements in the area. So not only will you get to experience breathtaking views and ancient architecture, but you’ll also get to feel like a true explorer uncovering hidden treasures. So what are you waiting for? Grab your hiking boots and head to Lohagad Fort!
