Kareng Ghar is in Sibsagar in Assam

It is located near the charming town of Garhgaon, just 15 kilometres away from Sivasagar, Assam, India.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Another palace, how exciting” but trust me, this one is different.

This palace is a grand example of Ahom architecture, made of wood and stone, and, drumroll please, it’s got a whopping seven stories! That’s right, seven whole stories of palace-y goodness. Though the access from 3rd floor is closed.

But, hold on to your hats, because it gets even better. The palace was rebuilt after the destruction of the old one, in 1752, by none other than Suremphaa (reign: 1751-1769) himself. And, it’s not just any palace, it’s the capital of the Ahom Kingdom and served as its military station.

The earliest constructions were commissioned by Sukhrungphaa in AD 1698 and in 1751, Sunenphaa, son of Sukhrungphaa, built the brick wall of about 5 kilometers in length surrounding the Garhgaon Palace and the masonry gate leading to it.
