Looking for a break from lounging on the beaches of Varkala?

Head on over to the Varkala Aquarium, where you’ll be greeted by a bunch of big, beautiful fishy friends!

This three-story building with a spiral staircase hosts a variety of marine species, including scorpionfish, angelfish, koi, and the famous karimeen.

The best part? You can view these majestic creatures from a walkway that spirals upwards, offering a breathtaking view of the aquarium’s inhabitants. And for those who want to learn more about the different types of fish, the aquarium has a 3D theatre that uses state-of-the-art technology to educate visitors.

While the Varkala Aquarium may not be the most impressive aquarium in India, it still makes for a fun day-long picnic destination. Kids will especially love it, thanks to the detailed information sections that provide interesting facts about the different fish species.

One of the highlights of the aquarium is its jellyfish exhibit, which is truly mesmerizing. However, we do have to note that some of the aquariums could use some maintenance and a bit more water movement. But overall, we think the Varkala Aquarium is definitely worth a visit, especially if you’re into saltwater and Asian/Indian freshwater fish.

So, the next time you’re in Varkala, take a break from the beach and visit the Varkala Aquarium. It’s located near the Black Sand Beach or Thiruvambadi Beach and is open from 10 am to 6:30 pm.
