Tung Fort is a hill fort located in Pune District, India that was built before 1600 CE. It was originally built by the Adil Shahi dynasty, but was later captured by the legendary Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

It is a small fort that can only hold 200 troops. What’s so special about it? Well, let me tell you that size doesn’t always matter. Tung Fort’s unique shape and structure suggest that it was mainly used as a watchtower to keep an eye on the Maval region of the Pawana and Mulshi valleys, guarding the road to Pune city.

Fun fact: The Dhamale family, one of the Deshmukh from the Maval region, was responsible for ensuring the security of Tung Fort. During an invasion, the fort served as a distraction for invaders so that the major forts of Visapur and Lohagad could prepare to meet the invading army. Sneaky, huh?

But enough with the history lesson – let’s talk about the fun stuff. Tung Fort is located at an astounding height of 1075m from sea level and is surrounded by lush tropics. The literal translation of “Tung” is “difficult,” so hiking up to the fort is definitely a challenge. But trust me, the breathtaking views and spectacular treks are worth the sweat and tears. Plus, the fort is perfect for a family picnic or camping trip.

Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the dazzling Pawna Lake, Tikona, and Visapur fort. And if you’re in the mood for some spiritual enlightenment, you can visit either the Tungi Devi or Ganpati temples.

If you have some extra time to spare, there are plenty of other attractions to explore around Tung Fort. For example, there’s Sausage Hills – a beloved tourist spot in Lonavala that’s perfect for hill climbing and bird watching. And if you’re a fan of camping, you’ll love Pawna Lake.

Don’t forget to visit Visapur Fort, which not only provides an excellent trekking expedition but is also encapsulated with a spectacular view of the valleys that surround it. And for those who love a panoramic view, Morvi Dongar hill is the perfect starting point for a trek towards Tung Fort.

But before you pack your bags and head to Tung Fort, there’s one thing you should know – there is very limited to almost zero cellular connectivity for all cellular networks in and around the fort. So make sure you disconnect from your phones and connect with nature instead!

All in all, one day at Tung Fort is enough to explore it thoroughly. During the day, you can trek and take in the gorgeous scenery. And at night, you can cozy up in your tent and stare up at the starry sky. So what are you waiting for? Come and experience the glory of Tung Fort for yourself!
