Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is located amidst the lush green forest in the banks of Periyar river. It is near another tourist spot Paniyei Poru eco tourist spot.
Kochi is 50 kilometers away. The bird reserve spread across 25 square kilometers.
The bird sanctuary is one of the best in Kerala, where you can find resident birds as well as migratory birds. One can also enjoy a boat ride (a speed boat or rowing boat) to view the bird reserve. Some of the birds you can spot or Indian cuckoo, collared scoops owl, ceylon fromouth, Malabar Parakeet, oriental darter etc.,
The other special attractions are butterfly garden, reptiles and peacocks. The migratory birds season is from November to February.
