St. John Wilderness Church is in Mcleodganj in Himahcal Pradesh.

It is one of the most fascinating churches built in 1852, this church is nestled amidst lush deodar forests and is a true gem in the valley of McLeodganj.

Now, you may be wondering why this church is known as “St. John in the Wilderness”. Well, let me tell you, it’s because it was built in the dense woods! That’s right, folks, this eccentric church is truly one of a kind. And let’s not forget the fact that it’s also the final resting place of Lord Ergin, one of the governor generals and viceroy of India during the British Raj.

As you approach the church, you’ll be blown away by its stunning neo-gothic architecture. And once you step inside, you’ll be greeted by the polished wood of the altar railing and old brass oil lamps (which have now been converted into electric light holders). But let’s not forget about those famous Belgian stained-glass windows that everyone’s talking about! They’re truly a sight to cheer.

The church is also full of memorial stones of the British soldiers who were posted here. And if you take a walk along the path, you’ll see some truly artistic holy cross symbols made with colorful stones. It’s clear that this church has some serious character!

And if you’re wondering how to get here, it’s easy. You can take a local rickshaw or taxi, or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even walk from Mall Road. Just make sure to take in that fresh mountain air while you’re at it!

Lastly, did you know that this church survived the 1905 Kangra earthquake, which killed close to 19,800 people, injured thousands in the Kangra area, and destroyed most buildings in Kangra, McLeod Ganj, and Dharamshala? That’s right, folks, this church is a true survivor! Its spire and bell tower were destroyed, but a new bell was brought from England and installed outside in the church compound in 1915.

So there you have it, folks. St. John in the Wilderness Church is truly a fascinating place to visit.
