Rockfort is an ancient temple tunneled in oldest rocks and built as an fort. This engineering marvel belongs to 8th century AD built by Pallava Kingdom. The rocks are said to be 3800 years old (older than Himalayas).
You reach the top of this fort by climbing 417 steps (100 metres ) and can enjoy the panoramic view of the river cauvery and city of Trichy.
Rockfort temple is in centre of the town and a landmark of its own.
You make a short climb, which may be little tiring but worth it. After halfway, you get refreshed by nice breeze flowing out of small windows cut through the walls of the fort.
At a fork, left is Thayumanaswamy temple and right is the way to top. Both are worth visiting.
Don’t miss the archeological sculptures on the way to top…
There is a Thayumanavar temple, is on the left when you climb the temple. It has brilliant painting and sculptures with a 1000 pillar mandapam.
