Gagan Mahal, also known as the Old Palace, is located in the charming village of Anegundi near Hampi.

This once-gorgeous palace, built during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire, was unfortunately ruined during the Mughal raids of 1565. But don’t let that discourage you, as the Gagan Mahal still exudes an old-world charm that attracts visitors on the Hampi trail.

If you’re a history buff, you’ll be fascinated by the palace’s rich past. It served as the dwelling place for the members of the royal family and was once the Queen’s quarters. The palace is also unique in its architecture, with its intricate carvings and functional pool with a water drainage system.

However, be warned that the palace is now just a shadow of its former self. It serves as a local administrative office, and lack of proper maintenance is visible throughout the structure. But don’t let that stop you from visiting! Parts of the palace have managed to survive the destruction and offer an idea of its original beauty.

So, if you’re up for some time travel and historical sightseeing, make sure to add Gagan Mahal to your itinerary. To get there, you can hire a two-wheeler or autorickshaw from Hampi or cross the River Tungabhadra. And don’t forget to visit between November to February for the best weather!
