Hazara Rama Temple is a must visit in Hampi. As soon as you enter, you can see the script of Ramayana in the walls. Wait, not literal script but like in a comic book with characters. See it to believe it.

But this wasn’t just any ordinary comic book – the stories were carved onto the temple walls in long arrays!

Sure, it might not be huge by Hampi’s standards, but it’s got some serious peculiarities. This temple was actually a private temple for the king, or at most, the royal family. Talk about VIP treatment! You can tell how important this temple was just by its location – all paths in the citadel converge at this very spot.

Its external walls are decorated with bas-reliefs of the Ramayana panels mentioned earlier. In fact, there are so many panels that the temple got its name Hazara Rama (which means “a thousand Rama”).

But wait, there’s more! If you’re ever in the area, you’re bound to come across this temple no matter what your itinerary is. Look out for the sprawling lawn located north of the temple – it’s an easy landmark to spot from a distance. And the path that connects the Royal Enclosure with the Zenena Enclosure passes right through the temple courtyard. Plus, the path from Danaik’s Enclosure and Underground Shiva Temple joins this path at the northeastern corner.

And if you’re feeling peckish, keep an eye out for the signpost installed in front of the temple across the path – it’ll direct you to the Pan Supari (Beatle nut) Bazaar. Trust me, you won’t want to miss it! The northeast-oriented trail from the temple courtyard passes through a packed but shattered cluster of structures. These associate shrines, pavilions, lampposts, and the like once decorated the main path to the temple. Keep going a little further along the same trail, and you’ll reach the sunken Pattanada Yellamma Temple and the Ranga Temple beyond it.

All in all, the Hazara Rama Temple is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Hampi. So grab your travel buddies, put on your walking shoes, and get ready for an adventure!
