Durgadi Fort, located in Kalyan, the busiest junction since ancient times! And guess what? It’s been renovated, so it’s looking pretty swanky nowadays.

But that’s not all – did you know that Kalyan was once an important international harbour during the Satvaahan era? Yup, this place has some serious historical significance. The city was even well fortified, with 11 bastions and multiple entrances. Impressive, right?

And here’s where it gets even more interesting: the fort was built by none other than Shivaji Maharaj himself, marking the initiation of Maratha Navy. That’s right, this fort played a major role in maritime history.

The fort also has a Hindu temple and a masjid at the top, which has religious significance for both Hindus and Muslims.

Of course, being a sensitive area, there’s a team of State Reserve Police Force personnel deployed for security. Safety first, people!

Now, let’s talk about the fort itself. It’s built on a small hill near the creek, and even though the main entrance has been destroyed, the bastions can still be seen. There’s even a Ganesh Idol at the Ganesh Darwaja entrance! And let’s not forget the temple of Goddess Durga, which was revived by Ramji Mahadev Bivalkar, the Subhedar of Kalyan during the Peshwa rule. So much history in one place!

Fun fact: during the fort’s construction, treasures were found during excavation for the fort foundation. And since it was believed to be due to Goddess Durga’s blessings, the fort was named “Durgadi”.

The fort has seen its fair share of action too, with captures and recaptures by various rulers. But let’s fast forward to today – you can easily reach the fort by bus or rickshaw from Kalyan railway station in just 15 minutes. So what are you waiting for? Come explore Durgadi Fort and see what other wonders Kalyan has to offer!
