Dewa Sharif, is a small town located in the Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh, just 25 kms away from the bustling city of Lucknow.

It’s a place known worldwide for the shrine of Haji Waris Ali Shah, a prominent site of Muslim heritage. But, did you know that Dewa Sharif is also famous for celebrating the Hindu festival of Holi with great enthusiasm? Yes, you heard it right! Here, people of all faiths come together to celebrate this colorful festival!

The tomb of the Sufi saint is enshrined within a splendid monument that boasts fine architecture and beautiful interiors. And, during the annual festival of Urs, which takes place for ten days in October-November, the shrine is transformed into a magical wonderland with tinsel, fairy lights, and colorful decorations. The event includes a grand procession, an all-India Mushaira, Kavi Sammelan, music performances, and even an elaborate display of fireworks.

Haji Waris Ali Shah, the founder of the Warsi order of Sufism, welcomed followers of all faiths and religions into his commune. He preached for peace, divinity, compassion, universal brotherhood, and well-being. He had followers and believers in countries like Turkey, Berlin, and England, making him a truly global saint.

The qawwali music outside the shrine is excellent, and you can sit there for a few minutes and listen to the melodious and sincere voices of the singers. And, if you’re looking for the best time to visit, try coming late morning or early afternoon when the crowds are less.
