Chini-ka-Rauza, the monument that made even the great Shah Jahan go gaga. This mausoleum was built by the Mughal emperor’s prime minister, Afzal Khan Aalmi, also known as Maula Shukrullah Shirazi, using glazed porcelain tiles. It was constructed in 1635 in Etmadpur, just a stone’s throw away from the tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah.

The mausoleum’s gardens are simply breathtaking, but it’s the blue glazed tiles that steal the show. Legend has it that they were made using porcelain brought all the way from China, and were called ‘chini mitti’ (Chinese clay) back in the day. The floral designs on the interior are a unique signature of Persian art style, and can’t be found anywhere else in India. This place is a true gem!

The most outstanding feature of Chini-ka-Rauza has to be the tomb, which was originally round and had a similar style to Afghani tombs. Sadly, it’s now in ruins, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less impressive. The monument is made using extinct Kashikari craftsmanship from Iran, and is the only building of its kind in India that’s still standing.

Once upon a time, this mausoleum was famous for its brightness, but today it’s a little worse for wear. Its shiny tiles have been uprooted, and the color of the walls has faded. But fear not, brave traveler! If you’re looking for a unique adventure and a chance to experience Indo-Persian architecture, then Chini-ka-Rauza is the perfect destination for you. Plus, you’ll have bragging rights for discovering a hidden gem that most tourists overlook. So what are you waiting for? Come see the monument that made Shah Jahan’s heart skip a beat!
