Champa Baoli is in Mandu palace complex in Madhya Pradesh.

This baoli is a historical masterpiece that was constructed during the Mughal times, and it is an architectural marvel.

The baodi is also a thing of beauty with elaborately engraved pillars, walls, and rooms filled with beautiful statues. And the best part? The rooms are below ground level and in the proximity of the water, making them much cooler than the surface temperatures. Can you imagine retiring to these subterranean rooms to escape the scorching heat of Indian summer? Ah, the life of the rich and royal.

Oh, and did I mention that the water in this baodi smells like the Champa flower? Hence, the name “Champa Baodi.” And trust me, this place was so popular that it must have been a social meeting point in all seasons, especially during summers when the baodi rooms were used by the ladies of the harem to escape the scorching summer heat.

The lower ground levels have very narrow passages, and the structures of the chambers in the cellars built inside this stepwell are like a maze. So, unless you want to get lost like a rat in a labyrinth, stick to the safe paths.

But don’t worry, there’s still plenty to explore. The extensive ruins of pillared arched corridors and rooms all around Champa Baodi suggest that this place was not just a source of water but also a social gathering point. And let’s not forget that this baodi was built not only for water management but also to avoid enemy attack. So, if you’re feeling brave, go ahead and explore the secret passages built into it.
