Belur Math is a sprawling temple complex in Kolkatta on the west bank of the Hooghly River.

It is a melting pot of architectural styles from different religions, which celebrates the unity of all faiths. And let me tell you, it’s not just for the religious folks, people from all over the world visit this place, irrespective of their beliefs.

The temple is home to the worldwide recognised twin organisations, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, and the campus is spread across 40 acres of land. You can find a temple dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda and Sri Sarada Devi, a museum, and several educational institutions affiliated with the Ramakrishna Mission.

That’s not all; the place also boasts a life-size statue of Sri Ramakrishna seated on a hundred-petalled lotus over a ‘damaru’ shaped pedestal made of marble. It’s said that the sacred relics of Sri Ramakrishna are preserved within the pedestal, so don’t forget to pay your respects.

The evening Aarti takes place at 5:30 PM, and let me warn you, there’s no loitering allowed on the Math grounds after that. But, the Aarti here is unlike any other place of worship, where you’re expected to sit and meditate. Don’t bother bringing flowers or sweets to offer, they’re not allowed. Just sit back and enjoy the peaceful ambience.

Swami Vivekananda himself was responsible for the design, and he went all out, incorporating elements from Hindu, Christian, and Islamic motifs. It’s like the temple is saying, “Hey, let’s all be friends.” From the Buddhist styles of the Sanchi Stupa to the Rajput and Mughal styles of architecture, everything is represented here. The ground plan is even in the shape of a Christian cross. And let’s not forget about the 112.5 feet high temple, built out of chunar stone, with Lord Ganesha and Hanuman carved above the entrance doors. It’s a feast for the eyes, folks.

So, if you’re in Kolkata and looking for a unique spiritual experience, head over to Belur Math.
