Attur Fort was an important fort during the period of Madurai Nayaks in 17th Century. Later it was occupied by Hydel Ali. Now the fort is protected by Archaeological Survey of India(ASI) but still many parts of the forts are dilapidated and left in ruins. Some parts of the fort are occupied by slum dweller. One who is seriously interested in history can visit the fort, which is near Salem.
