Shilloi Lake is a must-see! It’s the largest natural lake in Nagaland and is located in Lütsam Village of Phokhungri area under the Meluri sub-division in Phek district. It’s shaped like a human foot and is surrounded by verdant valleys, making it a stunning sight to cheer.

But wait, there’s more! Legend has it that a baby was found floating in the middle of the lake with two hands bobbing it. Locals believe that the baby is the reigning queen of the lake and the spirits of the lake are its protector. So, despite being the largest natural lake in Nagaland, there have been no reported deaths by drowning in the lake. If you’re curious about the lake’s legends and history, then head to the Patakai Range in which the lake is situated, and immerse yourself in the true culture and history of Nagaland’s famed tribes.

If you’re an avid bird watcher, then Shilloi Lake is the place to be! The lake is a haven for migratory birds like Siberian Cranes, making it the best place for bird watching in the state. And if fishing is your thing, then you’re in luck! The area is known for its fishing spots, but you’ll need to pay a nominal fee of Rs. 100. The best season to fish is between June and September.

But hold on, before you plan your visit, here’s a friendly tip: leave early in the morning as the journey from Kohima till Shilloi will take a lot of time due to the bad road conditions. And make sure to carry lots of drinking water and food for your journey, as the possibility of finding eateries is minimal. Trust us, you don’t want to be stranded without any sustenance!

And if you’re worried about where to stay, then fret not! You can reside at the guest house and mix with the friendly locals. You can also spend time rowing boats or just relax and enjoy the serene surroundings.

Getting to Shilloi Lake is relatively easy. The closest airport is the Dimapur airport, which can be reached by hiring taxis or taking a base to the city center. From Kohima, you can take a bus to Phek district, where the lake is located. The closest railway station is also at Dimapur, from where you can easily hire a cab to the lake.

So pack your bags, put on your adventure hats, and head to Shilloi Lake for an experience of a lifetime! And don’t forget to try some unique Naga cuisine like Dry Pork, Smoked Pork Stew, Bamboo Steamed Fish, and Kongshia Lon among others. Trust us, your taste buds will thank you!
